Old rail line turned urban oasis

Modelled after The High Line in New York City, The Goods Line in Sydney is a former railway corridor used to transport goods that has been transformed into a dynamic public space to seamlessly blend modern design, green spaces, and cultural experiences.

The tracks are still there but the trains are not

Stretching from Central Station to Darling Harbour, The Goods Line is a roughly 500m elevated pedestrian pathway that is in the heart of Sydney yet easy to miss if you’re not sure what to look for. There are a few entry points along the pathway with the Powerhouse Museum at the northern end and Central Station at the southern end, so recommend starting at either of those two ends. It’s a pleasant and convenient way to walk between Central Station and Darling Harbour while avoiding traffic.

(the Powerhouse Museum is a whole separate destination and worth a visit if you have an interest in art, science, innovation, and design – good for adults and kids alike!)

Other than walking, The Goods Line is a nice place to just hang out in the city away from all the noise and traffic, with ample seating. There are some nice art and historical exhibits along the way, and even some ping pong tables if you’re feeling a bit active.

An interesting landmark along the path is the UTS Business School building which has a cool, wavy architectural design. You’ve probably never seen anything like it before so definitely take a moment to admire!

Since it’s right in the heart of the city, The Goods Line is definitely worth a visit although don’t expect it to be as busy and exciting as the original High Line in New York. The city is trying to make better use of the space though, and sometimes cultural events are held there such as Vivid Sydney. Perhaps you’ll be lucky and come across one when you visit!
