Point Roberts

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Point Roberts

Nestled at the southern tip of the Tsawwassen Peninsula in British Columbia, Point Roberts is a unique and charming anomaly—a piece of the United States that is only accessible through Canada, which is why this post is catergorised as a Canadian travel destination as opposed to American. This small, picturesque enclave is surrounded on three sides by water and the fourth by the Canadian border. Let’s explore the intriguing charm of Point Roberts, a place where the Pacific Northwest meets international curiosity.

Getting there

One of the most fascinating aspects of Point Roberts is its geographic isolation. To reach this small peninsula by land from the rest of the United States, one must pass through Canada. It’s a quirk of history that adds an extra layer of intrigue to this coastal community.

One particularly interesting border crossing is at Monument Park, where the border crossing is essentially completed unprotected. There’s a yellow barrier preventing anyone from driving across but nothing really stopping anyone from walking across.

Activities

Surrounded by the waters of Boundary Bay and the Strait of Georgia, Point Roberts is a haven for marine enthusiasts. Boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding are popular activities along its scenic coastline. The Marina at Point Roberts provides a gateway for exploring the Salish Sea, and the calm waters make it an ideal spot for sailing and fishing.

Don’t expect to see many people in Point Roberts

Nature lovers will find solace in the Lily Point Marine Reserve, a pristine area showcasing diverse ecosystems. Hiking trails wind through lush forests and open up to breathtaking viewpoints, offering glimpses of the Gulf Islands, the San Juan Islands, and the Olympic Peninsula. When I drove into Point Roberts I asked the border agent what was worth seeing in Point Roberts and he recommended Lily Point.

Rural Tranquility

Point Roberts exudes a rural tranquility that stands in stark contrast to the bustling nearby cities. The lack of traffic lights and the presence of charming local businesses contribute to the community’s relaxed atmosphere. Many people choose to live here to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. One person I met mentioned he moved from Portland during Covid and loves how quiet and safe it is in Point Roberts. It’s probably one of the few places left in the US where people don’t feel unsafe leaving their doors unlocked.

Shopping and dining

Given its unique location, Point Roberts has a multicultural flair. Many residents have ties to both the U.S. and Canada, and the blending of these influences is evident in the local culture and businesses. It’s not uncommon for residents to cross the border into Canada for shopping or for Canadians to visit Point Roberts for a taste of American life.

Point Roberts itself doesn’t have many options when it comes to shopping and dining. In terms of shopping, there’s a supermarket, a country store, a hardware store, and that’s about it. When I went in January there was one cafe which was open and one tavern which wasn’t. I was told it gets much busier in the summer though.

If you’re seeking a destination off the beaten path, where coastal beauty meets international intrigue, Point Roberts is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. Whether you’re drawn by outdoor adventures, cultural curiosities, or simply the serenity of a coastal escape, Point Roberts offers a unique experience at the edge of two nations. So, set your compass for this small American enclave in the heart of the Pacific Northwest and discover the allure of Point Roberts. Just don’t get caught crossing the border illegally!
