It’s an easy day or even half-day trip from Sydney, taking about 1 hour to get there by driving or public transport. It has a small, quaint country town vibe so definitely a good place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. There is a train station but note that it’s located about a kilometer away from the heart of town, where you’ll find the Windor Mall pedestrian shopping street with the historic water wheel located at the Baker St end. Definitely a good photo op for adults and kids alike!
Windsor Mall, the heart of the town, is a delightful blend of shopping, dining, and community gatherings. Explore boutique shops offering handmade crafts, antiques, and local produce. The mall often hosts events, markets, and festivals, creating a lively atmosphere that reflects Windsor’s strong sense of community. One highlight is Lollies ‘N’ Stuff which is a massive confectionary store full of sweets and desserts from all around the world. Definitely a fan favorite for kids and those with a sweet tooth!
If you’ve had your fill of deserts, check out The Hawkesbury River, a lifeline for the town, provides a picturesque backdrop to Windsor’s charm. Take a leisurely walk along the river, where you’ll be treated to views of the iconic Windsor Bridge and the natural beauty that thrives along the water’s edge. If you go during springtime (October to November) you’ll be treated to some brilliant purple jacardas and fiery red trees.
If you’re into museums, there is the Hawkesbury Regional Museum with historical exhibits and the Hawkesbury Regional Gallery with artwork. Both are open 6 days a week (closed Tuesday) and have free entry, so definitely worth a visit.
If you’re feeling thirsty, then head over to Macquarie Arms Hotel, which claims to be the oldest pub on the Australian mainland and is filled with old-world charm. For nice views over the town, head upstairs the cedar staircase and relax with a drink on the historical verandah.
